WHEELS
TO WORK
Program Manager:
Kevin
Patterson
What is Wheels to Work?
Wheels to Work focuses on eliminating the number one employment barrier for low
income individuals--lack of transportation. The program was established to
provide affordable vehicles through a minimal payment, no-interest loan.
Eligibility
- financial need-unable to obtain a car loan independently
- do not already have a vehicle in the household
- be employed, or have a commitment from a potential
employer once transportation is acquired
- Community Sponsor required
What is a Community Sponsor?
A Community sponsor is an agency or organization that will "endorse" the
applicant to the Wheels to Work program and wishes to partner with Rolling Hills
RC&D to make Wheels to Work successful. In other words, a Community
Sponsor, is required to know the applicant personally and be willing to
recommend them to the program with the confidence that they have a legitimate
financial need and will be faithful to fulfill the requirements of the contract.
A Community Sponsor is not a "co-signor" and is no way responsible for the
financial commitments of the applicant-- but is required to commit to working
closely with Rolling Hills and with the applicant to ensure that the process is
successful.
If you are interested in being an applicant to Wheels to Work
and need a Community Sponsor, consider the non-profit family based organizations
that know you well. You may have to develop a relationship before
applying. Family members, friends, and employers may NOT be a Community
Sponsor.
How
do I apply?
If you are in need of transportation to work and meet the eligibility
requirements listed above, you must first obtain a Community Sponsor. Have
your Community Sponsor contact our office and we will begin the application
process through them. We do not send out applications directly to
applicants. Once your Community Sponsor has assisted you in filling out
the application, you will be placed on a waiting list and will be contacted for
an interview when funds are available. If your interview is successful,
Rolling Hills will locate a suitable vehicle for you and get you in your vehicle
as soon as practicable!
What about the cars?!
We select the vehicles for the clients. Make and models of vehicles
depends upon the size and need of the family of the applicant as well as the
ability to make reasonable monthly payments. We have a goal of applicants
paying these vehicles off in approximately 2 years. Most cars are worth
between $2000-$3000 and may have higher mileage. We do have these cars
inspected to ensure safety and road worthiness- however, they are used vehicles,
and may need maintenance.
Once I'm
a client... then what?
Once you are approved as a client and receive your vehicle, you will sign a
contract and agree to the following:
- repay the vehicle through affordable monthly
installments.
- maintain full coverage insurance on the vehicle with
Rolling Hills listed as lien holder.
- if you are involved in any kind of accident, you will
contact Rolling Hills immediately. Rolling Hills will handle all
insurance claims on behalf of the clients.
- maintain and repair vehicle as needed... providing copies
of receipts to Rolling Hills RC&D.
- keep the vehicle in good working condition through
regular servicing for the duration of the loan.
- attend a budgeting, money management, and vehicle
maintenance class that will be provided through Rolling Hills.
